What is gua sha?
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical practice in which the body is scraped with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate tissue repair and recovery. Facial gua sha is a gentler, modern form of the traditional technique. A polished palm-sized stone, with rounded edges shaped to fit facial contours, is used for a light but effective tissue massage that can reduce puffiness, release muscle tension and promote circulation and lymphatic drainage. It can also serve as a relaxing and focusing ritual, and if performed regularly, can provide both physical and psychological benefits.
Gua sha technique
Gua sha facial massage is based on a simple outward sweeping motion, from the center to the edges of the face. Massage as much of the face as possible, including the forehead, cheeks and chin area. On the neck, the stroke can be upwards or downwards. Make sure to use oil, moisturizer or serum, and to apply only light to medium pressure. While gua sha can be practiced every day, a five-minute session three times a week is usually sufficient.
